Smart home technology has proliferated, and today there are multiple platforms out there supporting various functionalities – smart climate control, smart garage doors, and the like. While all of those are worth considering, they are not all the same. If you’re in the market for a smart lighting system, you’ll need to know how to choose the right platform.

Scalable

One of the first considerations to make is how scalable the platform is. That is, how simple is it to add new lighting fixtures to the platform over time? Do you have to jump through hoops to detect, then configure, then connect to the new device? Or is it plug and play? The easier it is to scale up or down, the more satisfied you’ll be with the system over all.

Expandable

How simple is it to expand your smart lighting platform? That is, is it flexible enough to support various lighting options on the market? Can it be expanded to include not just lamps, but also hardwired lights in your home? What about the light over your stovetop, or your exterior lights?

Wireless Control

Having a hardwired control centre within your home is all well and good, but we rarely stay in one place. A smart lighting platform that offers wireless control via a smartphone or tablet app in addition to a hardwired control panel will offer the most convenience, and allow you to control what you want, when you want, from wherever you want.

Plays Well with Others

Finally, make sure that the smart lighting platform you choose plays well with others. What does that mean? Simply put, you’re eventually going to want to expand your control beyond the lights in your home. What about your garage door? What about your heating and cooling system? What about your lawn sprinklers? What about your home security system? Make sure that the platform you choose plays well with other systems, and can be enlarged to include all the areas of your home that you want.

There you have them – some of the most important tips to consider when choosing your smart lights.
